We just watched 1917. I’ve been wanting to watch it since it launched but managed to persuade Rachel to watch it with me tonight.
Honestly one of the best movies I’ve seen in the last decade. It didn’t pull its punches at all, re the journey the main protagonist has to go on, but there wasn’t a single frame where I wasn’t totally engrossed in it.
Cinematography and camera work was pretty incredible as well. From the viewer’s point of view it’s done in 2 takes. I think I could see about 6 or 7 places where cuts actually took place, but it was phenomenally well done. Even with those hidden cuts, the actual areas that were done in one take were huge. The choreography involved in getting it done, between actors and camera people, must have been ridiculously complicated and well rehearsed.
It is, in my opinion, a really special movie. One of Sam Mendes’ best works.
