Well, the speeches are done. I’ve loved these games, despite everything. They’re an example of the positive things that happen when we set aside our differences and just play.
Something we know a lot about as gamers. Something we need more of in the wider world too IMO.
I always get a bit teary at the end of the games. Doesn’t get easier as I get older. This year it’s weirder still as I miss Japan a huge amount even though it’s 40 years since I lived there; it’s been lovely to vicariously experience a little bit of Japan every day for the last fortnight.
But we have the winter Olympics later this year, and only three years until Paris. And the Paralympics in a couple weeks too.
Highlights for me. Track and field was incredible. 400m hurdle world record was a once in a lifetime thing to witness, as was the women’s triple jump. I really enjoyed the hockey, more than I’ve done in years. I was fascinated by the handball, the archery, and the urban sport stuff was amazing. Top of the list though, women’s sport climbing and the marathons. They were incredible.
Anecdotally it seems the Japanese people have warmed to it as well. Which is great to hear. The Japanese are a warm and outreaching folk IMO, it’s nice to be reminded of that.
Anyway. Enough. Sorry for the waffle. Olympics are a mostly 4 yearly headfuck for me 😄
