So now have fiber connected to the house, they brought it in the same way as the old telephone copper line which came into the back of the kitchen. Most of the time we use the tv room upstairs at the furthest point of the house from where the router would be….as you can imagine, wifi signal is poor and got about 30-40mb/s instead of over 900mb/s😭
I do have a couple of Deco mesh extenders, 1 needs connected to the router and I need the other by my desk to then connect to my ethernet switch so doing it like that still had a huge drop as they were still too far apart.
I had though about getting a couple of Wi-Fi extenders for the hall downstairs and upstairs but I prefer wired connection for the PC & PS5 etc.
I decided to dig out the old BT internet ethernet over power units, 1 connected by ethernet to the router then the other upstairs into my switch, again no good as downstairs is on a different circuit, it still works but at a low speed (must use the common neutral I guess) so other than running ethernet cable from the kitchen to upstairs I was looking at never being able to use my full speed.
A bit of googling and I found that you can also get ethernet to Co-ax convertors (dunno why I didn’t think this was a thing tbh), my house is wired with TV outlets in every room except the kitchen…..damn that previous owner but you can get up to 2.5G/s network running through co-ax.
Anyway now I have ethernet over power from the kitchen to the living room downstairs then convertor to co-ax which then goes to the attic and down to the TV room through a 6 way splitter in the attic. Then from the convertor from coax back to ethernet and into my switch…..max speed on test 200mb/s…..aargh
Checked all the settings in all the adaptors, all set as should be, looked into the Eth over power units and they’re 100/1000 ports so they’re good.
Plugged both Eth over power units in the same double socket and plugged directly in with my laptop and I maxed at around 320mb/s 😓
So for now, 200ish is all I’m going to get upstairs unless I add Wi-Fi extenders or run some cabling. I’m thinking of the latter as looking at the box the router connects to, it’s pretty much the same type of fiber to ethernet convertor box I use at work for ROV systems, I can just buy some fiber with the connector and an inline connector and mount the box elsewhere in the house, just need to lift some floorboards, make some holes, make a mess and tidy it up again 🤣🤬
Anyway if Eth over power isn’t working for others, look at these eth over co-ax units or similar (there are some with multi eth ports) they work very well.
