Would like to have seen removal of mike, speaker, touchpad (not used like a mouse), light bar, proprietary battery. I think X1 controller is superior.

I’m the opposite, never really liked the feel of Xbox controllers

Gammerz Totally disagree on the battery, still don’t understand why MS don’t provide a rechargeable battery built in like every other device in the world. Except so they can fleece us by charging 20 squid for one separately.

That said I do hope the DS5 has much longer battery life this time. I think it has improved with the gen 2 DS4 controller but still not where it should be.

I’m using rechargable AA batteries and getting on fine with them - they’re usable on other devices (and will work on series X) and I don’t get fleeced.

All these extra features (mic, light bar, speaker, touchpad) will use valuable battery life - these features really aren’t needed.

Gammerz In your use case, sure they aren’t needed. But i can see my own use case being enhanced by them on a daily basis.

I suspect they wouldn’t go ahead with features like this if the millions of research dollars said they weren’t needed.

The one really intriguing thing about this announcement is that they have very studiously avoided showing the back. So we still don’t know about the rear paddles.

I bought a recharge pack and after only a matter of months the pack doesn’t hold charge as long as I’d like. When I’ve finally had enough I think I’ll get some rechargeable ones like you Gammerz

If the DS has a built in rechargeable battery, when it goes doesn’t that render the gamepad fairly useless? If that’s the case I can understand Xbox’s approach, but they could include the rechargeable batteries!

The controller looks neat, and certainly a bit more interesting than the Xbox one which you’d be forgiven for thinking it’s not actually new. But on the whole, I still prefer the Xbox as the analogue sticks positioning is more comfortable for me. Looks like longer palms/grips this time round though which could help.

        • Alex replied to this.

Yeah I like having the speaker and touchpad and never really had an issue with battery length with ds4’s as I’ve pretty much always got a 2nd one charging at all times.
The colour of this is growing on me, seen some really cool Photoshop’d marvel character colour versions on Twitter as well as different standard colours, all fan made though but shows what’s probably likely to happen from Sony.

At the end of the day. What you’re used to is always what you’ll prefer. As obvious and banal as that sounds.

I’ve never had an issue with either and jump between both with no issues. The one thing that counts against Xbox in my house is the size of the controller. Neither Rachel nor Lily will touch the Xbox controller because it’s too big for their hands and isn’t comfortable as a result.

I think that’s an aspect that not enough gamers give credence to and it will seriously hamstring the growth of console gaming; arguably it’s a significant reason why the Switch gender balance is… well… better balanced.

BritishBean the battery dying is not a big issue on PS4 as far as I know, although of course it does happen. A bigger issue has just been that the battery life isn’t very long.

I think the current PS4/X1 controllers are pretty similar, but I’m more used to the PS4 one just because that’s where I’ve done 90% of my gaming this gen. The only feature I really don’t like is the controller speaker, which as someone with hearing difficulties is next to useless. I hate having to strain to hear some tinny noise through a tiny speaker rather than listening through my expensive audio system. It’s always the first setting I turn off if available, and any game that doesn’t let you turn it off goes straight to CEX (although that’s rare). One reason I own an expensive audio system is because I do struggle with sound a lot and even the default TV speaker isn’t great for me (although my current Samsung actually has pretty decent sound). So yeah. not a fan. The rest of it I like or am ambivalent to.

Brave EG have a pic of the back. It looks much more like the existing DS4 from this angle.

Alex well let’s say the underside then. Essentially where rear paddles would be is the one angle they’re not showing yet.

I mean I would buy it. I suspect it;s fake, but it does echo the dev kits, and I do think they’re doubling down on the psvr colour scheme.

Yeah it’s just a mock up apparently. I like the tie in with the Dev kit and echoing of that design in the joypad - which I’d not spotted before.

It it did end up looking like that (or similar) I don’t think I’d mind much. People seem to lose their stuff over things far too easily.

I like it, lots of mock ups going about though

Reminds me of a storm trooper… not that there’s anything wrong with that 🤔🙃

BritishBean well it’s either that or the monolith from 2001: A Space Odyssey

You want to be Jedi or a monkey throwing sticks? 😀

Brave surely the answer is Jedi to any question, but if you ask my wife I’m sure she’d say the latter is more realistic comparison.
