Variable frequency processor with a power limit sound like it may cause some dev headaches when they push the PS5 to its limits. “Standard” external SSD is good decision. What happens if you can’t sit in the sweet-spot for 3S sound - is that extra processing going to be wasted on you?

I think many players are getting the jitters about the PS5 throttling. Sony’s thermal solution may not be a good one and they may suffer as a result this gen.

Gammerz it’s not quite throttling, that is related to heat. PS5 as I understand it is a power profile. So you can guarantee a specific speed from both the CPU and GPU, giving one or the other a bit more power as fits your requirements. It’s an interesting approach which is being miss understood a bit based on how PC CPUs throttle.

It’s something of a compromise but does help attain better performance for most titles than a fixed clock speed.

Yeah when I first heard this I was worried it would make performance of PS5 non-deterministic, but in the talk Cerny says the throttling is based on overall activity of the chip, rather than temp. So this means that devs still have full control over performance, just now they are able to trade CPU for GPU performance and vice-versa.

So everybody’s now seeing this spec sheet and they see PS5, 10.2 teraflops, and Xbox Series X, 12 teraflops. And it’s like, oh my god, the Xbox is more powerful than the PlayStation. But meanwhile, the people I’ve been talking to over the past few months and the past couple years who are actually working on the PlayStation have pretty much unanimously all said: This thing is a beast. This thing is one of the coolest pieces of hardware that we’ve ever seen, we’ve ever used before. There are so many things here that are revolutionary, so many behind-the-scenes tools and features, APIs, and all sorts of other stuff that is way beyond my scope of comprehension. The XSX is clearly a well designed beast, but we are going to see great things - and very close things - from both. It’s a great time to be a gamer.

The DS5 revealed. That’s definitely a look. Presuming the console looks like that it’s going to be an interesting machine.

I like it. I think it’s good they’re both trying to do something different visually at least. We’re living in the future supposedly, so they really should look the part imo 😉

I think people will poke fun and compare it to the old banana controller, and as always there’ll be a loud crowd that complain about something something dpad.

Moving the light bar to the sides of the touch pad though makes me think the controller won’t work with current PSVR though as doesn’t that use the light on the front of the DS4

I like. Looks nice, like the new features too. Built in mic and a mic mute button \o/. Think that indicates it might also link into smart hub functionality.

More obvious dual colours a nod to the X1 controllers and big money to be made in custom colours etc. Share button is now a Create button too…

Would like to have seen removal of mike, speaker, touchpad (not used like a mouse), light bar, proprietary battery. I think X1 controller is superior.

Gammerz Totally disagree on the battery, still don’t understand why MS don’t provide a rechargeable battery built in like every other device in the world. Except so they can fleece us by charging 20 squid for one separately.

That said I do hope the DS5 has much longer battery life this time. I think it has improved with the gen 2 DS4 controller but still not where it should be.

I’m using rechargable AA batteries and getting on fine with them - they’re usable on other devices (and will work on series X) and I don’t get fleeced.

All these extra features (mic, light bar, speaker, touchpad) will use valuable battery life - these features really aren’t needed.

Gammerz In your use case, sure they aren’t needed. But i can see my own use case being enhanced by them on a daily basis.

I suspect they wouldn’t go ahead with features like this if the millions of research dollars said they weren’t needed.

The one really intriguing thing about this announcement is that they have very studiously avoided showing the back. So we still don’t know about the rear paddles.
