I’m reading into it, but given what they’s specifically said, it sounds unlikely we’ll see an actual final hardware reveal, just a fixed tech spec. In which. case MS are still a step ahead. Course, may not matter if launch gets delayed because of you-know-what.

It’ll be a rebadged X1SX with a PS5 logo. 😉 Sony may be keeping the spec on paper so they can frantically change it to improve it over the X1SX.

Aaand given almost everyone us stuck at home and can therefore watch it, Sony’s website has fallen over.

Try their YouTube channel? I’ve got it on and it’s counting down 😁

1 minute - got to collect child in 10 mins! 🙁

Just catching up. Very interesting. Some big core stats are notably lower than XSX. However Sony do seem to have taken a good focused and trained approach to the design. Narrow and fast GPU compared to wider but slower on the XSX. Overall I don’t think there will be a huge difference. I can see why they waited for this sort of tech talk to discuss though many will just look at the headlines.

The SSD seems to be a big focus. Speeds are double the XSX with hardware to handle this speeds all the way through to memory.

Can we see some games now please? 😁

The talk was very dry and didn’t contain much interesting information for consumers. Also an awful lot of it was about 3D audio.

Alex It was meant to be the GDC talk - was always going to be techy and dry.

Couple of other points - will support other manufacturer SSD expansion as long as it’s fast enough - bit of a new thing for Sony! I’m thinking it could/should be cheaper than XSX. Maybe not down to $400/£350 but probably $450/£400 with XSX $500/£450.

Even as a tech person I found it dry. Just saying in case anyone was thinking it would be an entertaining watch. 🤣

Brave Blimey, Leadbetter writes quickly! (Yes, I know he had a head-start). 😉

Will continue with my plan of PS5 this year and XSX next year I think X1X will last me another year or so, PS4 needing an upgrade 😀

Variable frequency processor with a power limit sound like it may cause some dev headaches when they push the PS5 to its limits. “Standard” external SSD is good decision. What happens if you can’t sit in the sweet-spot for 3S sound - is that extra processing going to be wasted on you?

Interestingly, my Sony WHCH 700N headphones just received this update.

Edit: Or rather, I saw this pop up in the software for it. It’s not a firmware update.

I think many players are getting the jitters about the PS5 throttling. Sony’s thermal solution may not be a good one and they may suffer as a result this gen.

Gammerz it’s not quite throttling, that is related to heat. PS5 as I understand it is a power profile. So you can guarantee a specific speed from both the CPU and GPU, giving one or the other a bit more power as fits your requirements. It’s an interesting approach which is being miss understood a bit based on how PC CPUs throttle.

It’s something of a compromise but does help attain better performance for most titles than a fixed clock speed.
