So I’m close to pulling the trigger on a new 4K TV with my Sony 1080p set having served me well for just over 9 years. Options, options, options …
Option 1). 55″ LG OLED C9 - Currently £1400 and will possibly drop a little further towards the end of the week. Fantastic class leading picture - particularly for around that price, great technology. Good OS and other features (supports Dolby Vision for HDR). 4 HDMI2.1 ports means great future proofing too and ready for ALLM, VRR etc in new consoles next year. Downsides are potential for burn-in and wearing out of LED if I keep for an 8-9 year stint - which is what I expect an expensive TV to last).
Option 2). 55″ Samsung QLED Q90R - Currently £1500 but includes a very good sound bar at that price too (Samsung Q70R). Picture quality is not OLED standards but it’s about as good as LCD/LED gets. It’s FALD (full array local dimming) and whilst it can suffer from a little bloom it’s pretty well controlled. HDR really pops with nit levels well above an OLED screen and no problems with burn-in. HDMI ports are 2.0b but do already support some HDMI 2.1 features like ALLM and Freesync VRR. It also comes with a One Connect box which helps hide all the messy wires and connections having one small hidden wire going up to the TV. Generally better in a bright room and good anti glare - which will be an issue for me during the day. The included value of the sound bar is attractive as it is something I was considering any way and this wireless Dolby Atmos supporting set reviews very well and normally retails at >£500.
Option 3). Wait until next year - many more HDMI 2.1 options will be released and there will be greater choice. New sets expected April-ish but would need to wait until November to get down to more reasonable prices.
Any opinions / experience?
