Gordon I decided this weekend that I wasn’t going to get through the snowy bit where I am now anytime soon so just revived my original Glow build save. Feels appropriate to get stuck into the DLC for the first time with my magic character as that’s how I start all my souls games.

I like my current black flame build but he doesn’t light up caves.

That said. It’s quite shocking the things I left undone in that save and the state my build was in. Fixed it now but I have no idea how I beat Elden Beast with him at the time.

Brave I thought my old save was gone, but just checked and my blasphemous blade/faith build is back 🎉 I am now ready, which means I can continue preparing for Dawntrail instead, for which I am not ready.

Turns out I hadn’t beaten Mohg on my original save 😭

Gordon Have you got to Mohg yet? I.e. are you at the battle entrance or have you found the area it starts in?

If you need to blast through the region leading up to him that’s reasonably easy to avoid most stuff. Excessive use of Torrent in the first instance then running through and ignoring in the second part. There are some nasty spawn in gits towards the end and if you don’t know where the correct route is then it can be tricky.

Once you get to Mohg I found summoning in a player called “MohgSlayer” was quite beneficial. Just be a little wary of summoning people in once you need to get off Torrent as it’s a bit of an invasion hotspot.

I’m all set to go … at lunchtime. 🙁

There’s a crystal tear you may have picked up that might help with the fight. I believe it’s called the Crimsonwhorl? You can pick it up in the mountaintops.

Gives you health back when you take damage but it’s a very narrow window for using it so you’ve got to time it perfectly for when that annoying red circle crushes you.

DrDamn I’m at Mohg, I’m also just incredibly rusty and not remotely ready to beat what seems to be a pretty hard boss. I respecced back to a sorcery build and got to the second phase at least. Will try again later.

Impressions after 15 minutes - wow there’s loads of places to go, WTF the very first guy I met killed me in 2 hits, oh great now the dogs are on fire, this black knight guy is a fucking dick and can one-shot me. GOTY.

Gordon was that first guy on the hill as you approach the map pick-up point? Torrent FTW - though I did also use about 4 health potions. Black Knight guy with a hammer?

DrDamn It’s a guy in a basement not far from the starting point. He’s quite unpleasant. He’s got a sword and a crossbow.

Gordon yeah. He’s a git. But not as much of a git as the big dancing lion boss from the trailer. Took me many many many goes.

Can’t say I’m enjoying this really. It’s way overtuned, bosses are relentless and put out stupid amounts of damage or just one-shot you. I didn’t much like the Bloodborne DLC for the same reason.

I tried having a go at one of the fire giant things. Me: COMET AZURE!
Flaming head giant: Oh you! That tickles. Here, have some FIERY BURNING DEATH!!!!

Have also found Knight in basement. Helped out a few times and will try him myself later. Summoning is really, really quick. Summon sign, you are being summoned!

Yeah summoning is instantaneous. It’s better even than original launch day I think.

I’ve hit a major roadblock but in true ER fashion I’ve discovered that I can explore somewhere else that I hadn’t even imagined was accessible, level up and also get a second npc summons for my roadblock when I’m ready.

I’ve also found the biggest hammer I’ve ever seen. So I’m tempted to convert my builds from magic to strength just to use it.

I do agree it seems harder ( got past the lion boss though have totally hit a roadblock with the next major boss) but also 100% agree with From re exploring.

I just went off for a nose around once I realised I was stuck and found huge areas filled with new stuff and upgrades that I would never have found if I’d been able to beat that boss.

I think increasing their effect is the perfect answer, so that’s really good, as it did feel like you had to find ALL of them to make a difference. A lot of people just seem to be trying to play it like a boss rush though. It’s so much bigger than the obvious straight line path. It’s really densely and vertically laid out.

Brave I wasn’t in the right frame of mind for it at all when it launched. I had a good session earlier today and it’s starting to click now. Going back to a sword and shield has helped a lot, my magic build wasn’t really working (or more likely I was playing it badly). Not sure how viable that playstyle will be long-term but it’s doing the business so far, and has always been my favourite way to play these games.

Gordon I reckon the black flame build I was playing before dlc launched would ultimately have been a better choice for me. The magic one I’m using was my first character and it simply wasn’t that well optimised.

I’ve managed to get it kind of close to where I want it now and I’m finding some fun spells so I’m going to stick with it, but I’ll be interested to see how different my experience is with a really well honed build later on.
