I’ve been piecing together what’s been happening. Basically, the Austrian contingent that was lead by Dietrich Mateschitz own 49% of Red Bull and the other 51% is owned by Thai backers, however they had an agreement that all the decision making would be made by Mateschitz despite him being a minority shareholder. After he passed away last year there has been a power vacuum and that has lead to this situation.
A drinks company owning a car business has never made much sense and so the plan was to spin off the F1 team into its own car company ala Ferrari, creating a new business that would be led by Christian Horner. The Thai backers are keen on this move and it would mean that they would basically be taking over the F1 team and the car manufacturer part and leaving the rest to the Austrians. This would leave Helmet Marco out in the cold and so it seems likely he is behind a lot of what has been going on. Which, frankly, is exactly the sort of shit stirring you’d expect from him.
It seems that this scandal and the leaks have been a part of a power struggle with the Austrians trying to get rid of Horner so that this plan does not come to fruition. Jos and Max are big pals of Helmet Marco and so that is why he has been saying what he has been.
The question for Red Bull seems to be, who is more important, is it Verstappen or Horner? I think the answer will be Horner.
