I played through the demo last night, it’s a couple of hours to get to the end of the campaign. It’s fine I guess. Reminds me of a B-tier Gears of War knock-off from the end of the PS3/360 era. Lots of grey and brown, lots of cutscenes with lots of swearing. The tutorial is weird - it basically teaches you to play it like Gears, but in all the previews and other stuff they’ve put out they keep saying it’s not a cover shooter and you need to play aggressively. Which is it?
The gunplay is decent enough and it starts to get a bit more interesting once you get some powers. They all seem to be on very short cooldowns so you can use them a lot which is nice. There’s a couple of boss-type encounters which seem to boil down to spending a lot of time chipping away at a big health bar while occasionally avoiding the glowing bits on the ground. They have a visible “cast bar” which shows you when they’re winding up to use a big ability, which you can then interrupt using certain powers, but it doesn’t seem to stop them for very long.
I played the whole thing solo. It’s possible that it only really shines in co-op, or once you get to higher levels and get more interesting powers/talents/gear, or maybe the technomancer class isn’t much fun. Or it may just not be very good. I’ll give it another try with a different class later, but as it stands it’s all rather disappointing, and I’ve gone from “almost certainly buying day one” to “wait and see”, which is probably not what they were going for with the demo. Oh well.
