I’ve got the BMW at Spa this week. Don’t have the tracks for the touring car or IMSA Pilot Challenge events so might actually have some track time to figure out why the BMW has been feeling wrong for me lately.

(although ShortStuff is having a sleepover at her grandparents so we immediately booked a table at the Italian down the coast for after dropping her off).

Long Beach is definitely skippable, it’s not a terrible track but it’s a pretty short US street circuit with a single config. I’d save my money for some of the better tracks.

Had a bad week so far. Had a bad race last night in the GT3 at Silverstone, I decided to do it in the Audi and for some reason kept dropping it through maggots/becketts. Then did a F3 race at Barcelona just there and dropped it on about lap five and gave myself 12 minutes of repairs. I’ve lost a lot of SR and IR. 🙁

Had a quick go this afternoon on the new pc once the USB adapter arrived. Set the quest to 80hz but 1.2 X on the resolution. Just ran a test race with 911 cup car on road Atlanta and on quite high graphical settings and it runs a treat.
Not had a chance to do a race but I get no glitching/flickering/tearing at all and it looks a good bit better. My laptop is pretty decent but just shows the difference.
Off to work Sunday though so no much time to play…. Oh well

The Skippys are at Knockhill this week. I had a quick practice and it seems a lot of fun. Might brave a race at some point although I’ve not raced the Skippy for ages.

I spoke to my mate who works at iRacing earlier today. Mentioned track limits, he says they’re looking at it.

He also said they used to do track days where they took members of the team to a track to drive real cars. He crashed his. They don’t do track days any more.

Nice race in the GT3s at Sebring. Never driven the track before but quickly became one of my favourites. It’s really great fun.

I messed up my qualifying but managed to climb up to 5th by the end. Had a good long battle with one guy in particular. Nice to have a good session after a series of bad races.

Alex Good watch that, don’t think I’ve done Sebring before either. Those Ferraris seemed to have you on braking into the last bend quite a bit though.

Out of curiousity, how does everyone go about practicing? I feel that because a race is almost always available I am jumping into races more than actually learning the cars and tracks. Which is good for race craft but I don’t think I’m really understanding the cars or tracks.

Conditions always seem different from testing to race and qualy despite selecting the session and I don’t quite understand enough yet for that to translate.

I’m really not getting the BMW GT4. Still feels like it is on ice and I can’t figure it out. Will be ditching it when I get to the end of this season. Currently just doing enough to finish a race and then move on.

The Hyundai touring car on the other hand just feels right and I know what it is doing.

More practice required regardless!

It depends really. I’m also of the view I’d rather practice while doing an actual race, you learn much more anyway while on the job, so to speak. I will tend to do enough laps to feel comfortable and then jump in a race, what constitutes being comfortable differs depending on a lot of factors.

For Sebring in the GT3 this week I probably did about ten laps the first day I tried it, which give me enough time to learn the track and get within a decent lap time. When I came back to it I found I was making a lot of mistakes so I did about ten more laps to get comfortable. So that’s probably around an hour. Normally I’d probably do less. As time goes on I find I do a bit more practice than I used to as with iRacing any tiny mistake can be so painful.

I’m not sure what your BMW GT4 problem is, I’ve always found that car very nice to drive and very analogue, you can slide it and feel what it’s doing through the FFB. It maybe forces you to deal with the iRacing tyre model a bit more than some other cars at that level which may be where the issue lies.

Alex Who knows. It could be the FFB they suggest on that car isn’t enough for me. I might turn it up to see.

Race from yesterday. Quite pleased with this one after the previous few races this week where I was used as a rail into corners. Did my usual first lap and dropped a few places although mainly due to a car in the faster class getting in the way and me being too tentative. Still, managed to get the places back through the race and could have had another place if I had been a touch more aggressive mid race.

Bet you were nervy that last 2 laps, the Honda seemed very quick once he passed that Kai fella.
I’m not a fan of multi class races, too easy to get caught up in nonsense you shouldn’t have to be near, although give that guy that was behind you 3 credit as he was so far behind his next position he didn’t mess with the 3 of you fighting it out for 3rd.

Jogort Sorry, I thought I had replied. Yeah I was definitely anxious near the end. Started watching the mirror more than concentrating on where I was going.

Anybody know if there’s a way to keep your bindings from car to car? Because I adjust some of the in car stuff like horizon, height and FFB I have each car set differently but it’s a pain in the hoop having to go back and bind all the buttons to each car when you jump in a new one.

Also, when practicing, is it best to go to the list of races and instead of registering for one just select test drive? That give roughly the same conditions?

I don’t remember if test drive gives you the same conditions. Time trial definitely does but has the downside that you lose SR if you make a mistake.

In terms of bindings there is an option to use different settings for each car that you can turn off. It’s a checkbox in there somewhere.

Apparently I am ready to be promoted as I’ve had a few decent results with SR and completed the required races. Still slow as hell right enough. Think I’ll focus on one main series next season and try and improve. Feel as if I’ve been bouncing around a bit this season.

Also, Knockhill Reverse is lethal in the BMW GT4. 🙈

First race after a bit of a break, the F3 at Donington GP. I only did about four laps of practice before jumping on, so my times are very inconsistent, also I make a few small mistakes. This is the configuration with the hairpin so I have no idea how to take the last two corners. Still, a decent result.

Also I found a new iRacing podcast that I am going to give a try. It looks like the MAP one probably isn’t coming back, which is a shame.

@Jogort Funny, was just thinking about that earlier. Was contemplating either the F3 or the Porsche Cup for next season but it’ll be dependant on tracks I think. Although @Alex does make them look easy 😂

Got placed into the upper tier for a race earlier and was dead last. Bit demoralising when that happens but I kept my nose clean and had some good side by side racing in the first ten minutes. I have been enjoying the touring cars this season but I’m not very fast at all. Spent a bit of time on Lime Rock and Knockhill to get a jump on next week’s TCR and IMSA events as we are out at the ice hockey on Saturday.

Going straight for the race participation credit next season. 😁

I think they’ve decided to focus on other shows these days. It’s a shame as it filled a pretty rare niche, there are loads of sim racing podcasts but they are all focused on the e-sports side of racing, this was the only podcast I know of that took a hobbyist and amateur point of view.

One good thing is that MAP are dropping the Mercedes F1 car next season and going back to the F3. I’m happy as I’ve really been missing my Monday night practice sessions. I took a bold decision early on that, while the F1 car is insane to drive, it would not be fun to race, and I feel I’ve been proved right on that.

Also the next F3 Cup race has been announced as the 25th.

I’ll have to have a go of these F3’s, been playing with the Legacy Pro Mazda today doing a just for fun time trial with PCGB. Quite liking driving the open wheeler, a bit more poke to it than the formula vee. Thought I was doing decent, my best was 52.7ish, most were posting times 52 - 53s then this afternoon someone bangs in a 50.4 😭😭 bloody aliens 👽
