The is the madness that is Bathurst in the Porsche Cup car.

This lap saw me 6th in qualifying. Sadly I tapped the wall on the second lap of the race and had 17 minutes of repairs. Sometimes I really fucking hate iRacing. 😂

FYI the Porsche Cup car is basically a slightly faster GT3 car except without ABS or TC.

Coincidentally the same car/track combination is the Hot Lap Challenge on the Discord server where I do my league races. On ACC the back just wants to overtake the front on turn in, same as the other Porsches to be honest. No idea how to cure that.

Next week is good for the series I’m doing, the F3 is at Spa, the GT3s are at Suzuka, and the Porsche Cup is at Red Bull Ring.

Raced the beemer at Watkins Glen this afternoon. Mostly uneventful. Started 7th, couple of cars overdid it on very cold tyres in front of me so I picked up 3 places on lap one (rolling starts are taking a while to get used to for some I think).

Then it was me and Gino who I just couldn’t get past. Initially I thought his defence was just very good but he eventually started to get a bit naughty. Cut me up when I was alongside a few times causing me to brake hard and was just a little unpredictable and aggressive.

I ended up being slowed down by him and decided to let the person who’d just caught me up go past and have a go. I’m not confident at that track yet so just felt I’d end up getting contact penalties especially with someone that erratic.

My ego got a boost as the guy I let through tried everything and still couldn’t safely get past. The last straight was just that Gino guy veering across the track to stop anyone passing him.

It’s actually a testament to the other guy’s driving that there was no contact.

Anyway. I actually felt a ton more nervous this time. it’s everything to do with track knowledge I think. If I could have safely found a way past early on I think I would have a good two seconds a lap faster than I’ve been before. I was matching my best times easily behind him.

I’ve had a lot of that when trying to pass, lots of jinks to the side goading you into moves and trying to force you off the track without actual contact.

Jogort it improves a fair bit when you do races that are a bit further up the license ladder. The guy who was problematic was just out of rookies I think.

I just want to do a few bmw races to get back in the swing as the car itself is pretty easy to drive. I’ll likely jump up to 40 minute races and longer soon which will see me racing with mostly b license and above. Not a guarantee of better behaviour by any means but imo it does make a difference.

I’d say it’s more iRating rather than license level, in the higher splits the driving standard tends to be better, although it can still be a clusterfuck. Also in higher splits the pace tends to be closer and you tend to get more incidents when there are large pace discrepancies which is more likely in lower splits. Of course this is also dependent on their being multiple splits which is not always the case for less popular series.

Missed Apex are running an endurance race on the 15th of January to raise money for Macmillan Cancel Research.

The race will be the 12 hour of Silverstone in the GT3s. I’m tempted to sign up as a loner (and placed with a team) but thought maybe you guys would be interested too. There is a £10 minimum suggested donation.

MAP obviously are the guys who do my favourite F1 podcast (which is how I found them), and the iRacing podcast, as well as the MAP F3 Cup I’ve been doing for the last few months. They try to make things very professional however there is a real spread of abilities in the races, it’s not all totally hardcore people, which is both a good and a bad thing.

Anyway if you guys are interested we could look at taking part.

Race from Wednesdays MAP swarm. I messed up my qualifying and started from the back pretty much, but managed to climb to 5th. Some quite good overtakes along the way if I do say so myself. 😂

Alex I read an interview with Jenson Button where he was comparing himself to Alonso and Hamilton when I realised I have exactly the same driving style as him. He turns once into the corner then controls the car through the apex by modulating the throttle and the brake. This is why he’s so smooth, one turn with the wheel and the the rest goes on under the covers. This is what I do, I control the car in this way. I make one move the wheel and then use throttle/brake to ride the car through the bend.

In the interview he pointed out that Hamilton and Alonso work differently, instead they brake once and then constantly adjust the steering through the corner to hit the apex and gain the best exit.

I meant to comment on this when you originally posted it a while back but it popped back into my mind when playing around with the new wheel the other day.

I’m exactly the same in that I use the pedals to rotate through the corner. I am stubborn and don’t like to turn the wheel beyond a certain point. Which I realise is irrational and probably affecting my pace. I noticed this the other day on ACC and made an effort to try and turn more. Feels so alien but the wheel all of a sudden let me know when the grip was kicking in and I was able to get on the gas earlier resulting in a few tenths off at the end of the start finish straight at Hungaroring. Its going to take a lot of effort to stop it but I can see the benefits if I can just break that habit.

GassyHaggis This is me exactly, to the point where I too won’t turn the wheel far enough in the corners, which as you say is crazy. It’s very track dependent but at Suzuka I found loads more pace by just being more aggressive with the wheel and turning it more. And also as you say one benefit is that by constantly moving the wheel through the corner you can feel the grip change through the FFB. I think it’s good to have both styles in your toolkit as steering with the throttle/brake is a skill that not everyone has, it’s considered an “advanced” driving technique.

Just an FYI that like me you’ll probably be very good at ovals. 😂

I’ve always been too far the other way ( in sim racing at least) I hate burning the tires but I’ve been making progress going a little bit more aggressive. I think I’ll find a happy medium. I’m not far away from hitting the 40 minute plus races where that aggression in other drivers can often be cancelled out by being kinder to the tires.

I say in sim racing because when I was an idiot in my teens I used to literally get my Mini to step out at the back by really aggressively yanking the wheel mid corner. It wasn’t fast but it could induce a little drift out of the car and also a little poop out of my mates.

I was stupid.
