I finally decided to take the plunge on this. I’ve been wanting something meaty to get my teeth into, so I thought I’d try this and really stick with it, something I failed to do with Divinity.
I’m a few hours in and I’m enjoying it quite a lot. I’m actually really getting into the combat and how that all works, although I still find all the hundreds of spells and abilities confusing. I’m also not totally sold on the slots system, but I think that’s mainly because I haven’t found a good balance of them to use them yet. I must say if you are not familiar with D&D then you definitely need to watch a few guides before playing. It really doesn’t bother to explain the combat system at all. The PS5 UI is a bit fiddly as well.
The story overall seems interesting and the characters are decent too, although I really don’t understand why they all need to talk like upperclass oxbridge grads. I honestly find it incredibly grating. Of course the vagabonds and creeps all have working class accents… I’ll get off my high horse but it is annoying. 🙂
My sort of only complaint right now is that it’s so dense with content it sort of never gives you time to breath. I know that sounds like a silly complaint, but it’s constantly pulling into these big long diversions. Click on a bookcase and suddenly find a whole hidden dungeon with this big storyline that pulls you away from your quest for an hour.
I think the difference between something like Fallout/Skyrim and this is that in those former games you are much more in control of the diversions, you make the choice to walk towards something interesting, but here you are much more likely to just get pulled into it whether you want to or not. It’s just a pacing thing, I guess.
Also, I do feel it’s often a bit random (outside of the dice throws), it’s often not clear that a dialog choice will have some far reaching consequence. It doesn’t really telegraph this stuff a lot of the time. I’m trying not to save scum but it’s tricky sometimes. 🙂
Anyway, looking forward to getting more into it.
