Seeing as it’s new year I figured I should update a bit.
I finally finished my MA (or at least submitted my final work for it) on Dec 12. I get my results back in mid Jan and graduate in July.
I started that journey on a completely different course 3.5 years ago before jumping to this one two years ago due to some issues I had with the original one. I’ve been doing this for longer than it took me to get my bloody degree. It’s been hard going (part time isn’t really part time in these courses, especially with the way my brain works) and I’ve only just started to come down off the walls the last couple of days.
The combination of the two MAs, though, has been transformative. I now have a proper practice in terms of making work. I think I’ve made more work in the last two years than I did in the previous 20. And work that I’m still proud of as well, which was a rare thing before.
I’ve got an exhibition coming up in April so I’ve got a lot to focus on in the immediate future, which is good as the sudden stop and the realisation that were no further deadlines was a bit of a shock after the frenzy of final deadlines. Almost all of us were hit with the “what now?” Blues after.
I am almost certainly going to submit an application to get on a PhD programme. The deadline is Jan 31 though so I suspect I’ll be told to come back in a year with a more developed concept. We’ll see. It’s going to be my focus from Monday until the end of the month. That and making sure I get out and make work, because I’m low key terrified that I’ll get comfortable with my feet up and just stop.
The kiddo starts her final year at uni in September this year too, which is crazy to think about. She’s been doing really well. Super proud of the person she’s turning into.
So yeah it was a big year, 2025; 2026 is hopefully going to be calmer on a personal level with a little bit more time for gaming than I’ve had for the last few years and hopefully the beginning of another, longer, adventure.
Thinking I might even get a tattoo to mark the milestones 😉
