You know, I was loving this but it’s actually starting to irritate me a bit. I appreciate it’s an indie game and you can’t have everything, but it feels like the areas where it’s just Off being right are the areas where it actually really matters. The collision detection is just a bit inconsistent, which in a game where you’re shaving fractions of a second by pushing the curve at every corner is a bad Thing. Some times you can run into a tree at full pelt and it says ‘meh’, some times riding over a flower makes it hit you with an invisible bus. Also, there are just a few places where you’re effectively flying blind because a tree covers a boulder that’s in a really tricky position to get round at speed, so you just kind of have to pick a line and hope.
it’s that close to being really, really good, but just occasionally it’ll bite you because of something you couldn’t do anything about, which takes it from ‘play for hours’ to ‘put the pad down and go do something else’.
Plus I think I noticed something which is a genuine bug. If you’re operating on ‘screen orientated’ rather than ‘bike orientated’ controls, some times at the stage start line after a wipeout it seems to take it a second or so to figure out exactly what the orientation of the controls should be, and for that second you don’t get any steering at all. Which on some courses where you have a wipeout hazard right in front of you at the start can lead to a series of wipeouts while it sorts itself out. And if you need to finish the race with X wipeouts or less to unlock the next one, and you’ve done all the stages Prior to that with none.. pretty bloody irritating bug…
So yeah, it is good fun and with some patching it could be properly great, but right now it’s a bit of a curate’s egg.
