OK so there may be a little bit TMI here so feel free to skip it.
I now have a suspected clot in a vein on the surface of my calf. This is not as bad as it sounds, it’s not Deep Vein Thrombosis which as it’s name suggests normally happens deep inside muscle in more important parts of the circulatory system, although rarely it can lead to that. I can still walk etc, but it feels like I have an angry dog’s jaw locked in my lower leg when I put weight on it.
I have had problems with varicose veins for years now. Most likely due to years and years of standing still in dark rooms working on prints. I was told back then it was a hazard of the job. Anyway, I suspect this, combined with increasingly sedentary lockdown behaviour ( feet up, on my PC while I work in my armchair) has led to my current issues; so my message is do what you can to move more than you probably are.
Despite doing an hour to an hour and a half of chores most mornings, I still had this happen. Maybe I should have spread them out a bit through the day or something so that I wasn’t quite so still for the rest of it.
Elevating my leg and hot compresses are working, and going for a walk last night, while painful helped too. The advice is to walk 3 to 5 times a day plus the heat and elevation. Problem is with the lockdown I can only get out once. I guess I’ll have to go on the static bike a few times a day, as tedious as that is. It can take weeks to subside but it does subside. It’s also more likely to happen if you have old man legs like me.
So yeah. TMI, I know, but I thought it was important to put this out there. Move regularly through the day not just intensely once a day.
