Adventures in Sim Racing

I spent the afternoon tinkering with various sims. Eventually bit the bullet and installed the modem RBR plugin. It’s a bit of a misnomer because it includes the original game files plus a bin load of essential and recommended plugins. It took about 90 minutes to get it installed and working properly with my sim rig.

The new physics are absolutely superb. Still very much in keeping with the original but brought right up to date. I found it hard to stay on the road until I turned down the original co driver audio and set crew chief up to give me pace notes. The RBR ones are nowhere near detailed enough.

I reckon I’ll be doing some of the live rallies soon. Need to get up to speed with it first but I thoroughly enjoyed my time with it today. Didn’t want to stop.

I’m still playing iRacing. 😅

One thing I’ve really appreciated about my new pedals is that they have made driving more powerful cars a lot easier, something I wasn’t expecting. I’m now able to drive very powerful single seaters like the Super Formula or Indy Car without losing control a lot, which I wasn’t really able to do before. I think it’s mainly down to having a throttle with a lot of travel which gives me much more nuanced control. If I’d realised this I would have replaced my pedals sooner, as I was using those Elites for a long time.

I haven’t been brave enough to take part in any official races yet, I have a feeling I will be obliterated, but I’m keen to start doing some soon. I have quite a high single seater iRating from the F3 and F4, which means I’ll end up in a pretty high split. I might run a couple of AI races to warm up first. The AI in iRacing is actually not too bad these days and it’s a good learning ground.

Got the rumble fitted. The control box from RaceAnywhere was only around £30 including postage.

Not very pretty, lots of loose wires and boxes around, but it works. Interesting playing around with them, it definitely adds an extra dimension to things.

I’m really enjoying them. I had to fire up simhub to get it working with RBR this week and it’s made a big difference there. I can feel when I’m locking up and spinning the tires now. It’s not hard to set up either. Took me about five minutes of tinkering once I googled which tab I needed to be in.

Brave I’ve downloaded SimHub, will give that a go.

Wowm, SimHub really changes the effect a lot. It’s much more pronounced and in fact a bit much at default settings. I’ve currently got most of it turned off now, except for wheel slip, traction loss, and wheel locking. Will need to play with it a bit, SimHub has got a gazillion settings.

Yeah. You can really tune it to your liking.

That’s the same as me but I’ve also got a wee thump of gear change as well , just because 😉
