So as a break from the fantastical Japanese world of Oni and Torii gates in Nioh 2 @Brave and I decided to try the fantastical Japanese world of Oni and Torii gates in GoT:Legends last night. 😃
It’s a bit bloody good! I’ve not progressed the main story that far, having decided this is one to savour without the jet engine noise my launch PS4 makes when I get a PS5 in a couple of weeks. So post tutorial/intro I picked the Assassin class, @Brave picked the Hunter and we started the 2 player “story” mode.
From the four(?) missions (with 3 short-ish sections each) we played it does so many things well and right. From the combat and controls to the structure of levels and how new things are introduced. It’s challenging and very satisfying to work co-operatively and have to think your way through encounters rather than dive in blades and arrows whirling. After breaking you in gently with the first couple of missions the introduction of new mechanics and how that affects how you can approach the objectives is really clever. So satisfying when a well planned strategy is executed well.
Couple of other notable mentions. “Loot” is all from end of mission rewards, which means in mission you can concentrate on what you need to do and the only stuff you need to look for is ammo and healing drums. This makes the game a lot more fun for someone like myself who suffers from fomo badly in some games, spending more time scouring levels for pointless pick-ups than in the action itself.
The class interaction is also really nicely done, we were often having discussions about how best to approach a set of enemies and trying to make the most of our abilities.
A couple more level-ups as an Assassin and I unlock a choice of one of the other classes - I assume that is effectively a second character? Don’t know whether kit can be shared between us?
If you’ve not tried it yet then give it a go, it’s really quite special I think for a free addition to the main title. Could see it spinning off as a free-to-play separate game, or maybe being added to PS+ / PS+ Collection. The selection of activities is good (not even touched the 4 player survival mode or other difficulty levels), there is loads to unlock and use as customisations, and plenty to enjoy.
