DrDamn Isn’t Deep Rock Galactic a Live Service game?
Nope. I think that’s a big stretch. The game can be played offline and the model is “keep making, and updating a good game and people will buy it, or support it”. The performance pass is entirely free and the content rolls into the main game at the end of the season. The reason it’s there is that they wanted to see if they could keep the good things about these passes and discard the bad. I think they succeeded but ymmv. It’s presence imo doesn’t make it live service.
They intend it to be free for the foreseeable future as well.
They have cosmetic DLC, which is the only thing that can be paid for outside the main game, but that’s not a Live Service exclusive feature. That’s in… games.
Live services can be ok. No Man’s Sky is considered one*, but the good ones are rare. And this many in 4 years? That’s nuts. Most of them are doomed to fail imo as they cannibalise each other and the market for single player games that they have so far excelled at.
And can you genuinely see a live service with Jim Ryan’s fingerprint on it that won’t be ultimately bad for consumers? I really can’t.
Destiny 2 is a great game, but as a live service it’s the number one example of treating your customers badly, deleting content that they paid for being just one of the egregious examples.
*I don’t see it as one personally, as it’s the same premise. Make a good game and keep it updated and people will buy it. To my mind, live service games typically have psychological hooks that tap directly into your bank account.
