Sony always seemed to have the less global timeslot for their main presentation. Always wondered if that was by choice or not.

Thinking about this a bit more, this is more significant as last year there was the excuse that Sony didn’t have much to say at that time. Games were announced, PS5 prep was under way but not ready etc. This year is a landmark year. PS5 is launching. If Sony aren’t there this year they really don’t intend to come back.

There are a few rumours of a The Order 1886 sequel doing the rounds too, which would be interesting. RAD are a big studio who haven’t put much out of late. I enjoyed the first, it had some great ideas and a fantastic setting to go with the graphical finesse. It could improve in a number of areas but it was a good foundation.

Also hearing there is a fight for marketing rights, and more so in MS case a number of exclusivity periods they are trying to secure. That would fit with the strategy of keeping first party stuff cross gen for a couple of years. They need some next gen “exclusives”. Easier to buy early in the generation, but imo can be bad for the brand (Titanfall, Tomb Raider).

So here is an out-there rumour for you. One of those take-with-an-unhealthy-dose-of-salt insiders on Twitter posted the following a week ago…

Thought it’s the usual vague stuff etc. Then another rumour popped up today about a revival of PS Home. That then seemed to fit the above.

A new social space linked across console, phones and PC plus supporting VR. Was never a fan of PS Home, thought the resources could have been better spent elsewhere. I’m not convinced it would work better today. Maybe if it was extended to a game space as well - think Roblox or where Minecraft is now with mini-games. My kids love that stuff.

Interesting anyway.

I’d welcome Home 2.0, although I ended up not using it much, but then miiverse came along and showed what could be possible. A Ready Player One style experience (with Dreams at its core?) could be flippin amazing.

Jogort it’s not legit in terms of real. Just a talented artist creating a - could be like this - video. The same site did a PS5 design guess. I hope back buttons make it in though.

Are those “back triggers” in the patents? They look hellishly uncomfortable. I’d have thought buttons or paddles like the new attachment for ds4 are more likely.

There is a weird bit in this video where she says that faster storage will allow developers to make smaller games, which doesn’t make any sense whatsoever, but other than that it was good. Although I’m not a super huge fan of this style of video from EG, it feels a little forced. I prefer the laidback chatty style of the Outside Xbox stuff. I guess it will take time for them to perfect their own style.

Alex that bit is actually true. Current games duplicate data all over the place to try and minimise load times, keep stuff contiguous. That won’t be necessary on a good SSD - so smaller games.

The two “facts” I took issue with were, still supports discs so you can save on storage space? Errr … It still needs to be installed. That and the new CPU being 70% better, it’s much, much more of an improvement than that.

Alex EG’s ‘house style’ has definitely not been the same since Johnny Chiodini headed off to DiceBreaker. They’ve not really bedded in a new style yet so it is all rather all over the place. Zoe very-longname seems nice enough but I don’t think she had the depth of experience Chiodini did - he’s been making games related videos on the internet for bloody years.

As to the whole PS5 thing… I’m sure it’ll be shiny, but I find myself not being enthused by it without some games to gawp at. We know the incremental jump in AV quality was higher between PS2 and PS3 than it was between PS3 and PS4 and I have a horrible suspicion we’re hitting diminishing returns and it’ll be less still between PS4 and PS5. Until we actually se something and think ’wow, you couldn’t do that on a PS4′ I’m not getting many hopes up.

Godfall’s nice shiny reflective armour looks cool but it’s entirely incidental to anything really. they might need to do something really obvious with raytracing to make the different very stark.

I think it’ll obviously look somewhat nicer, but the SSD and CPU are going to change the experience completely - much more so than shiny new graphics. Very low load times, better AI, physics etc. It may not look that different, but it’ll feel different.
