Gordon Just listening to the latest DF podcast, and one thing I did not realise is that in the original TLOU all of the cutscene are prerendered, however in TLOU remake all the cutscenes are now fully real time. So you need to keep that in mind when watching any comparison videos.

New PS Plus is live. Looks to be the same selection of games available elsewhere. £25 for me to upgrade to Premium until the end of the year.

The UI is a bit of a mess - there’s next to nothing in the way of filtering options (e.g. no way to filter out PS3 games if you’re not interested in streaming, and PS1 games are for some reason tagged as PS5 games). Apparently we got PAL versions of the PS1 games. There’s also some odd stuff like Mortal Kombat 11 is only available to stream.

I managed to find about ten games I want to play so I’m fairly happy to pay for the upgrade. Whether I stay subbed after it runs out very much depends on whether they improve the “classic” game support. A very small selection of PAL PS1 games, a handful of PS2 “remasters”, a few PSP games and streaming only for PS3 is a very weak offering. The middle tier looks like the best option right now.

Good news but why didn’t they do this in the first place? It’s not exactly a surprise that people want the NTSC versions.

Gordon I think it’s likely a cackhanded and low effort way to ensure as much language coverage as possible in the European offering.

Brave It’s that and probably licensing. Even Nintendo manage to do this properly though.

The PAL/NTSC thing is the same on most platforms when they launch, it was like this on the Switch I remember. They tend to release the PAL version as due to being European it tends to have more languages available. It’s good for them to add the option for the NTSC version too as then those of us who notice things like frame pacing can get that version instead.

Alex It’s not just frame pacing. Many of the PAL versions run at both a lower framerate and lower speed in general, and a lot of them have black borders at the top/bottom of the screen too.

I’m likely not going to spend too much time nostalgically playing PS1 games but nice that they are at least working on it. I suspect there are a mess of underlying licensing issues involved (music for a start). I will give Jumping Flash a quick go as it was a Christmas present from my future wife back on release.

If they somehow manage to add FFT I’ll be all over it like a rash though 😃.

DrDamn I spent half an hour playing a couple of them and that’s enough really. I’d love FFT but I’m still pinning my hopes to the rumours of a remake/remaster being accurate (not to mention whatever Tactics Ogre Reborn ends up being).

Forcing a yearly payment is extremely shady and means they can say the thing’s been a success for at least 12 months without worrying about cancellations.

I’m going to pay the 12 quid just now but I’m very tempted to cancel completely when renewal comes around.

Brave I presume you are yearly on your current PS+, and possibly with auto-renew enabled? So it’s effectively maintaining your current preferences in that regard (and the cheaper way to do it) because you are upgrading to a higher tier of an existing service. If you were paying monthly currently then maybe it would default to that? It’s at the very least clear what the charges are, when you will be charged and how to change things if you want.

The discoverability and actually finding stuff on PSN is generally shit, so it continuing to be shit on new PS+ isn’t a shocker. Does it still support the Add to my list stuff PSNow had? That was quite useful for tagging stuff to go back to.

I’ll stop after this as otherwise it’ll just be a big rant, but looking through the list I’m getting really frustrated by:

a/ the lack of ability to filter for PS5 games which is likely caused by …

b/ a notable shortage of them. Even most Sony titles are the PS4 version. That’s just a bit shit imo.

Hopefully Stray is far from the only interesting launch title they get on day one between now and when my subscription renewal is up, because otherwise this is simply not a compelling offering for me.

Edit: Oh and clicking on the extra button only to have premium games pop up in the list isn’t getting on my tits. Not at all.

I’m actually coming round to it having poked around a bit more. Got a dozen games downloaded that I want to play. Tried streaming MK11 and Spider-Man and it actually worked extremely well. Between that and Stray next month, I’ll easily get my money’s worth already. The question is how frequently they add new stuff and how good that new stuff is. If they keep adding a couple of things I want to play each month, I’ll probably stick with it. Will see how it looks when my 6 months runs out.

I do think the UI is pretty bad but Sony have never been good at UI. I’d chalk that up to incompetence rather than anything else. I also think they should have added at least one completely new game to the service at launch as an additional incentive/thank you. Oh well.

I reckon it looks pretty good as well, I’m thinking I’ll take the year update and then see how I feel later. I think your mileage may vary based on how many of the games you’ve already played, if you’d just bought a PS5 then it’s a pretty great deal. There’s one or two things that I’m looking forward to playing, like Demon’s Souls.

Brave Ah you never know, I liked Dark Souls and Bloodborne. 🙂

It’s not the souls games themselves I object to, it’s the way souls mechanics seem to be crowbarred into every game these days without any finesse.

DrDamn You can add things to your wishlist but it doesn’t seem to have the “my list” thing that PSNow had, which would have been very handy. One thing I am finding quite problematic already is just keeping track of all the stuff I’ve downloaded. The ability to just dump all PS+ games into a single folder would be very useful, or even better, do it automatically. I’m having to go into my library and just scroll through looking for stuff I downloaded. Maybe there is some way to organise it all but I haven’t found it yet.

Nope. I was monthly, and that was my only option when I went to upgrade.
