I do honestly think Schumacher is overrated. And I mean that literally. The stats suggest that Schumacher was the best grand prix driver of all time (before LH), but really he’d struggle to make the top five.
Schumacher was a great driver who brought unparalleled professionalism and physical fitness to the sport, but I also think that he benefitted from driving during an era where the level of the field wasn’t at its best. Mansell and Prost had just retired, Senna was killed. His only real rival was Hakkinen and he retired early. Who were we left with? Montoya? A guy who literally had a beer belly. As soon as the likes of Alonso came along Schumacher suddenly didn’t seem as quick.
Also Schumacher never had any really good teammates. His teammates were compliant journeymen like Irvine and Barrichello. Compare that to Hamilton whose teammates have four world titles between them.
Schumacher was a great driver, he had some brilliant victories (Spa ’96 comes to mind), but in the grand scheme of things I wouldn’t put him on the top step of all time. Hamilton for example is better. Prost, Senna, Fangio, Clark. There’s a good chunk of drivers ahead of him in the all time stakes.
