Will check the 4K versions later when I can wrest the TV from my son.

Overall. Lots of titles, lots quite far away by the look of things. Very little talk so good viewing. Everything on GamePass too (though the CrossFireX stuff was a little sneaky in that regard).

Have to say that graphically nothing blew me away at all. Just watched the Halo 4K gameplay segment. It’s very clean in terms of IQ with a big open world, still lots of little graphical glitches though (texture/LOD pop-in all over) and frame rate hitches - which seemed more to do with streaming tech than what was going on at the time. Hopefully ironed out before release. Gameplay wise it looks really nice though.

That was solid enough, I feel pretty much whelmed. Halo I’m not too bothered about, some of the other stuff looked good but seemed quite far away. Honestly, nothing making me re-think my plan to buy a PS5 and then get an Series X when it drops in price.

Alex yeah I think that’s pretty much still my plan also, will wait to get an sbox as Halo and Fable does peak my interest but PS5 day one.

Thing is, they’re really focussed on the service with the hardware quite secondary. You’ll probably be able to play it on a decent pc or via xcloud anyway.

It’s a very interesting launch season, this one.

DrDamn Forza - early in development? WTF have Turn 10 been doing for 3 years?

I said the exact same thing. Has the Series X launch come as a surprise to them or something? To not have a Forza Motorsport at launch us a big disappointment for me. I’ll probably now wait until next year to buy the console once I’m in the new house.

IGN spoke with Halo Infinite Studio Head Chris Lee ahead of today’s long-awaited gameplay reveal of Halo Infinite. During that conversation, Lee revealed that Infinite is the last standalone release for the franchise for the foreseeable future.

“Halo Infinite is the start of our platform for the future,” he said. “We want Infinite to grow over time, versus going to those numbered titles and having all that segmentation that we had before. It’s really about creating Halo Infinite as the start of the next ten years for Halo and then building that as we go with our fans and community.”

This does not mean that Halo Infinite is a live service game, a la Destiny. But it does mean that new story experiences will be told underneath Infinite’s umbrella, and it also means Infinite will be evolved technologically for quite a while. 343 confirmed that Infinite will get a free raytracing update sometime after launch.

I like the idea of bigger franchises becoming game platforms. I.e. no yearly/bi-yearly updates. Just expand on what you already have. So pleased to hear Halo is taking this approach.

Given the name they chose it was pretty clear they were going for something like this. I did originally wonder if they were going for the destiny audience but it makes less sense in the world of John117 I guess.

Full Price Game as a Service? I thought that bit the dust with Anthem. People won’t just accept that any more, which is why Destiny for example went free to play. if people pay 50-60 quid for a game, they expect the ‘service’ bit to be free, so you can’t make any money at it and your maintenance costs become horrific, but you can do it if you don’t charge up front and instead actually charge people for the ‘service’ part. people will accept paying for things, but won’t if they’re feeling like they’re paying for something twice.

Pretty much every game that has tried ‘full price plus GaaS’ has either had to go Free To Play eventually or died on it’s arse.

In this case I think it’s more Halo as a platform. Essentially initial release will have full SP campaign and MP included, then instead of Halo 7 or Halo Infinite 2 being released they just build on the core with expansions (more like Destiny 2). Building on Halo MCC essentially keeping it all in one package. That approach I’m fine with.

It won’t be full price though (unless you want that), it will be part of game pass. I think you need to consider everything MS is doing now from the view of how it will affect game pass. That’s clearly where all their plans are headed.

So I’m struggling to say what we’ve seen running on an XSX at this point. If Halo isn’t then nothing bar maybe the backward compatibility and the Minecraft RT demo has been. Which <4 months from launch is not good.

The other conclusion I’ve come to is that the “We will support X1 for two years” isn’t some consumer led nicety, it’s simply that their nextgen stuff won’t be ready for 2 years. Forza, Everwild, Avowed, whatever is coming from the Initiative. None of it is ready for 2 years+.

Think this sums it up quite well. I’ll probably get a Series X a lot sooner than I normally would with a release console. But that’s only because Microsoft Rewards has been so good. Should have about £250 worth of points come Xmas time.

I think the downside here is there isn’t really a price competition between them. Given the difference between the launch lineups and the totally different focus in terms of hardware Vs service, I think Sony isn’t going to have to worry about what price the series X is.

I find that pretty disappointing. It’s weird. It’s like they’ve been caught on the hop here. Yet they took the lead in initiating the build up.

I think of you are invested in GamePass and want more then a new Xbox XSS or XSX will make that experience a lot nicer and third party stuff will be great. The big three camps seem to have found their happy place. Be interesting to see how that develops as the generation moves forward.
