Got the TV setup last night, been having a nice play around with it.
First impressions are that the setup is a bit confusing in terms of attaching the stand, there was no setup guide in the box, just some QR codes that linked to a manual, so it wasn’t clear what all the bits or screws were for. Eventually I managed to get the (very heavy) stand attached and got the TV into the right place.
There is a slight dent in the top left corner of the TV, that may be enough to get it replaced, but it’s not that noticeable (unless you’re me) and doesn’t affect the picture. I’ve decided just to accept it as something that adds character.
First impressions are very positive, the image quality is fabulous. Watching some premier content on Apple or Netflix looks phenomenal. That said, it sort of does expose some issues with low quality input, such as Sky F1, which is still old school HD and looks a bit ropey by comparison. I’ve not fiddled with it yet either, as it looks pretty amazing out of the box.
For gaming impressions are also great. Everything feels incredibly fluid and the motion clarity is first class. One thing it allows is 40 fps gaming (120hz with VRR), something my old TV could not handle. I must say this seems to work brilliantly, and playing Black Flag Resynced in this mode really is impressive. You get all the ray tracing gubbins while maintaining a surprisingly smooth framerate. It does feel like a bit of a sweet point in terms of quality vs performance. I really hope Rockstar can sneak in some sort of 40 fps mode for GTA6 (for the Pro, at least).
One downside is the remote, which is pretty much like a normal remote, but tries to constantly switch into this motion sensitive pointer mode. I don’t know if there is a way to turn this off, it’s incredibly irritating, and makes it very hard to adjust settings a lot of the time.
As Brave said there are a lot of ads and things in the main dashboard that I’ll need to look into minimising. This is pretty standard for TVs (for everything?) these days, so not surprising.
A real standout feature is how well the TV works in a bright room. I was playing Black Flag earlier this afternoon with the blinds half open and it was still completely playable, even dark areas in game. As well as being quite bright, the screen just doesn’t seem to reflect much external light, despite having that black gloss look of all OLED screens. Even if you just sit in front of it with the screen off it doesn’t seem to reflect much. Not so much “black mirror” as just “black”. Anyway, it’s impressive and actually a really great quality of life factor.
Overall the first impressions are great. Definitely feels worth the cash.
