The thing for me is that after Mosseri utterly destroyed the photography community in Instagram by chasing TikTok, he seems to have genuinely created a new haven for photographers.
All the corporate shite is inescapable no matter where you go. And the likelihood is that we’ll all be on multiple platforms for multiple reasons for the foreseeable.
But for me, Instagram had a horrible effect on my medium. It enforced an aspect ratio, it has people creating identical garish images to feed an algorithm and it eventually cheapened it entirely before discarding it.
From what I’ve seen in the barebones of this, photography has been thought of from the very beginning. It treats images beautifully, without forcing a crop in any aspect ratio. Series of images work fantastically too. And on day one the community has started to thrive in ways I haven’t seen in years. So for my niche it’s amazing.
The rest of it is just inevitable corporate crap that’s going to be the same coming from any crappy corporation.
