Finally took down the lavaback. Solo, I might add. Only took me 40 minutes 😄 I thought I was stuck on this last night, but actually it wasn’t too bad with a bit of forward planning.

The fight unlocked one of the best (imo) karskuris, which managed to keep me in the fight when I was on the verge for ages. I did cart once though.

I’ve done all the monsters in that next area now, but I’ve yet to do the additional fights that unlocks. One of the monsters (the grit dog) is particularly good for making armour that can help in the lavaback fight.

Going to try and make some good poison gear next. 🙂

I did the first couple of hunts in the second area last night, and did a bunch of quests for various folks in the town. Quite a noticeable step up in difficulty. Got some nice new karakuri stuff though and I’m now starting to be able to make elemental weapons 🙂

So I’ve joined the party on PS5. Just to reiterate what I was saying in game last night, the colour balance, HDR and contrast is screwed on XBox compared to PS5. I played the trial on XSX and it looks terrible in comparison. Either washed out on default settings, or if you make adjustments to make it passable the night time stuff looks awful. PS5 has better contrast, much more vibrant colours, better HDR. It just looks so much better overall. Hopefully some patches sort that out on XBox.

DrDamn Seemingly the PS5 version was updated this morning, so with any luck the other versions will be too.

Really enjoyed that last night.

Even just simple things like it classing the ragetail that we took down as its own fight with its own time and rewards, and then letting you carry on with the hunt for the king tusk. It’s little things like that that remove the friction and add a bit of spice.

Lunchtime discovery - when Gritdog rears up and does the thing that pulls you in followed by big explosion, you can climb on it. Seems if you’re not touching the ground when the explosion goes off, you don’t take damage. Think you may be able to build a box and stand on that too, and I think jumping also works, although the timing is difficult.

Did another 3 or 4 Gritdog hunts last night and I’m now less sure about climbing up to escape the pull in and explode. I managed to do it a few times but it’s not reliable. I’m fairly sure I saw someone interrupt it once but I’m not sure what they did.

I had a quick go yesterday and tried one of the initial quests from Minato. Just a hunt for a Sapscourge. Went out into the area and explored a bit by myself, harvested some stuff etc. When I found it I used the summon randos button that pops up and that worked really well. Two additional fighters spawned in pretty quickly and we took him down.

Also tried out the bow which has some nice mechanics to get used to. Works very well with others getting close and distracting the kemono, will probably need some more practice before I’m comfortable using it by myself.

DrDamn The online implementation really is great. Last night when I wanted to hunt Gritdog, I selected “Join Session.” A few seconds later I get a message saying “None found, do you want to create one?” so I selected ‘yes,’ the level loaded and within 10 seconds two players had joined. Really easy.

Gordon yeah. It’s actually the most friction free online system I’ve ever seen I think. There’s not many games where I actively seek out sessions with randoms.

Polished off a few more quests last night with randoms. Then did some exploration of the map to open up the Dragon fire things, upgraded most to level 2 - I really like that you can do that from the map rather than having to visit them all. Also set-up the additional camp up near the top.

Gear wise got the first three additional armour sets made and upgraded a katana, bow and nodachi a little. Need to cover off any remaining Kemono in the first area (only done Ragetail, Sapscourge and Kingtusk so far). Then I’ll look at travelling to the next location.

I accidentally moved on to chapter 3 the other night. Followed the narrative into a mahoosive fight that, even with random help, was really tough. I’ve still got almost all of chapter 2’s side hunts to do. =\

Brave I’ve just moved on to chapter two without meaning to. How do you set the chapter?

Gordon it’s at the bottom of the map. You can switch it back to chapter one to see the missions you’ve missed.

Took down a Fumebeak last night with “help” from @Brave. I was doing it solo via a general no selected hunt wander round the first area. Very tough kill with my current kit. I had requested help but none arrived, and was on my last “life” and low on healing. Fumebeak was close to death but it was still not looking likely. Then a new hunter joined the session and I noticed it was @Brave! (incidentally I think it let him know I was looking for help when he started the game up - which is yet another great bit of intergration). Unfortunately I went down whilst he was on his way - but there was still hope, I could be rez’ed! But he didn’t make it, couldn’t quite get there in time, he was going as fast as he could and definitely didn’t stop to collect a cog thing he didn’t have yet … 😃

We got it on the next try though. Still tough fight as he buggers off quite quickly sometimes. @Brave unlocked a repeater crossbow Karakuri during the fight. This was apparently because you had the Stake and Glider Karakuri equipped and the Fumebeak took off. Very useful.

I’m ready to move on to the next area now I think.

Interesting point of note. The Fisherman’s Guild quest things where the requirement is to hunt a large Kemono, they only count for the person who does the finishing blow. Which is a bit off if you fight as a team and someone ninjas all the kills - hopefully they patch that.

Bit conflicted on this. Been playing the trial on the Series S and it’s really good - I like the tweaks they’ve added to the MH formula and the monsters are awesome. But it’s a real shit show from a technical perspective on the Series S - it looks like arse and can’t even get close to a constant 30 fps, reminds me of original Dark Souls Blightown levels of inconsistency - you can get through it with gritted teeth but it definitely impacts the experience substantially. Given that it’s not exactly cheap either, i’m trying to decide whether to take a punt on them being able to tidy up the performance rather than diving on in, which is a real shame.

Fumanstu they’ve said they’re going to implement dlss I think, but whether that carries over to console? Who knows. 😞
