I feel like there’s a vast difference between what the EG team, or at least some of them, want to write and what the readership expect from a review, for example. I genuinely don’t have an issue with her review. I actually think she voiced her concerns in the best way and that they seemed valid enough, and it didn’t dominate the review IMO. I’m not sure in this case about her not playing past the first boss. She seems to voice similar concerns re the later plot that others do. It’s just that she gives it more weight.
I think Ed Thirwell’s Sifu review was more egregious by a long shot than this one tbh. Turning up for a review (albeit positive) and discovering half the word count is devoted to contemplating the hegemony (his word) is a bit much for most people I think. It’s like getting cheese and onion when you thought it was salt and vinegar 😄
I actually think there’s a place for this stuff on EG, clearly labelled for what it is. I’d likely find the read interesting if sometimes simplistic and problematic. But the way it goes down right now, always reminds me of when my daughter’s friend’s parents (very religious) invited her to an Easter egg party where we were told it was just going to be some chocolate and some egg painting and egg rolling. We got there and it was the full service, sermon and all because they were “very concerned that we were bringing her up to make up her own mind”. I was genuinely concerned they were going to try and baptise her. They might have felt justified, but it’s at best disingenuous and at worst hugely counter productive.
