I’ve just played an hour or so with this and it’s pretty good in my opinion. It feels a bit barebones in terms of the interface though, and the way it onboards you. The tutorial is just a big digital manual really, and it’s not really front and centre when you start the game.
It took me a couple of rounds to understand how to spin the ball and “shape” the shots, but now that I’ve kind of gr0kked it, I’m finding it quite rewarding, if a little “flustery”. It’s easy to get mixed up about when in the process you need to apply spin and add curve for example.
I reckon it’s a decent round of golf though, mostly relaxing and fun, and feels great in handheld mode. Chilling on the sofa while the telly’s in use. It’s just one of the “safest” implementations of a Nintendo IP I’ve seen in years. Worth the money, but not going to set the world alight. Which is fine, but I fear we’re starting to see the real impact of Iwata’s passing now. No big swings for the rafters. Just calculated bunts to chip away at the score; which makes me a little sad.
I sound down on it. I know, and it’s a good golf game. A really fun one. I just hope I see the mad Nintendo of old at some point soon.
