Strange colourful 3D platformer from SquareEnix with serious Dreamcast / Nights vibes and suitably wacky characters. This was on my radar and a demo hit yesterday (on all major platforms I believe).
It’s … well … pretty awful unfortunately. Looks pretty and runs well on PS5 but gameplay is stilted and old, the camera wants to make me puke and it’s just all manner of wrong. There is a core idea that you unlock different suits with different abilities which is sound enough, but the implementation is effectively giving your current character just one ability and mapping it to all your buttons. So basic character can jump, next can jump-spin, next can breath fireballs (but not jump). You can change between 3 selected characters on the fly but the transition isn’t instant and that just makes it feel like a system where you can do more than one thing, but you have to press shoulder to select the right outfit, wait for transition, then press a button instead of just … well pressing a button for example.
The vomit inducing camera isn’t helped by the way levels unfold out in front of you - which is an interesting idea, just extra chunder-tastic when combined with the camera.
🤢🤮
