Just finished the fight. Well, round 1.
I’m in two minds. It’s clearly a big step forward for 343 and actually I liked the open world stuff a lot. But the final push felt every bit as repetitive as the flood in the first game. It’s where the whole 30 seconds of fun cycle wears very very thin. Imo, the story needed more time in the oven, the bad guy was far too pantomime to take seriously, but I did come away liking the Weapon and the Pilot. Although, again their individual shticks wore thin. The Weapon’s constant need to be told what things are and the pilot’s incessant complaining early on specifically.
It’s no Reach, or ODST, but in the end I do think it was a success. Certainly a very good springboard for whatever comes next.
I’ve got a handful of things to clear up on the map and that’s me done until coop arrives, which I think will transform the experience. In fact I think a lot of the level design centres around it. Pointing again, to the rushed or troubled development.
It’s a miracle they got something this good out the door.
