As mentioned in the other thread, been thinking of upgrading my PC now that I spend all day sitting at it again. My aims are to build a machine good for software development and gaming. So basically an IntelliJ and Steam machine. 😄
My current machine is as follows:
- i5 4690K 3.5ghz (quad-core)
- 16GB (4×4GB) 1333Mhz DDR3 RAM
- Gigabyte GA-Z97-D3H motherboard
- 500GB Sandisk Sata SSD
- Asus GTX1060 GPU (3GB model)
- 600W PSU
A quad-core with four threads isn’t really cutting it these days. It was a great value chip when it came out but the lack of good multi thread performance is hurting. I need to change motherboards for the CPU (whether I go Intel or AMD) and you can’t buy DDR3 motherboards any more, so buying new RAM is a requirement sadly. I think I’ll update in bits and go for the CPU, RAM and motherboard right now. The GPU is alright for the time being and the SSD is fine too, but in the future would like to maybe upgrade to a RTX card for ray-tracing, and a PCI-E SSD to give really crazy speeds. However, going to worry about those later.
I went back and forth about whether to go Intel or AMD for the CPU but have decided on AMD Ryzen 7. The price/performance of these chips just beats Intel at the moment. If I was to go Intel I’d go with a i7 9700K, but am going to go for a AMD Ryzen 7 3700X which is £264.58 on Amazon right now. I’m not a big overclocker so am not too fussed on the mobo, so going to spend around £100 on that, which should give a solid one although lacking high end features I’d never use anyway. 16GB of DDR 3000MHz RAM is £69.99.
That gives me:
Total: £434.56
Payday isn’t until Thursday so will review before then. 😀
