Rachel and I just binged this over the last three nights. It’s the best TV I watched in 2019 and honestly it may well be the best TV I watch in 2020 as well.
It’s just brilliant. From a technical point of view, there were a number of episodes that took my breath away; but more generally it just subverted everything about the superhero franchise phenomenon going on right now, it even subverted the expected structure of this kind of series.
Normally when creators go this route, there’s an inevitable technical shortfall. But as I hinted earlier, not here. I’ll be rewatching this and taking notes, just purely from a photographic standpoint. There was an episode almost entirely in monochrome, and it was perfect. Monochrome is my field, and it was actually perfect.
Soundtrack was incredible too. Collated and I believe performed in part by Trent Reznor from NIN.
It was incredibly gory, but it never once felt gratuitous. It always justified itself, every step of the way.
