My dad spent the first five years of his life on the Isle of Barra. Didn’t speak a word of English until he stepped on the mainland.
It always shocks me to see the amount of hostility I see these days to the language. Particularly, I have to say , in Glasgow. It’s somehow become fouled up with all the horrendous bigotry around football. If it’s to survive, it’s stupidity like that that needs to get the hoof.
I have lots of relatives who still speak the language and my daughter even studied it at uni as an elective because she wanted to understand a bit more of her family history. It’s a real shame that its on the brink.
