Apparently the official line is it’s just going to be called ‘Xbox’ generally from now on and the ‘series x’ bit is kind of just a dev title. If they’re going big on streaming of course, was the hardware actually is isn’t all that important anyway…

Having skipped this generation (only game i have been remotely intrested in was Sunset Overdrive 🤣 ) i could be tempted. If only for the looks of the thing 😄

AMD admits it used a fake Xbox Series X 3D model in its press event. So, hopefully, it won’t look like a brick?

Gammerz MS already showed the machine itself. AMD used a render based on that - all the speculation about ports etc was incorrect but the basic tower shape is set.

Brave sounds like wishful thinking. Can’t see it being true and some MS linked people have already discounted it (Jez Cordon).

I’d rather see a platform that allows PC games to be more readily converted to Xbox than a generic Windows 10 mode, with all the compatibility and performance issues that would come with it. There’s lots of PC games I’d like to play but prefer the level playing field and ease if use offered by consoles.

But it’s better than not having the feature and having to buy a PC.

It could work because of the fixed hardware. The issue with Steam Machines (remember those?) was they all had different hardware, meaning that you still had to faff about configuring each game to run, rather than just running out the box like a console game would. This way developers would create an Xbox profile for their Windows game, or Microsoft could create one for each game similar to what they do for back compat, that could automatically load in the best settings for whichever Series X machine you have. This would solve one of the major drawbacks to PC gaming. But yeah, not sure it will actually happen or even should.

I think they clearly want PC / Xbox convergence game and eco system wise. They aren’t going to be allowing other store fronts into their eco system though. That’s where they make the cash. So streamlined dev tools to make transition from PC to Xbox easy, and OS level stuff on Xbox to help with that too, but Steam and Epic stores on Xbox? No, not in my opinion. There are not enough upsides and too many downsides.

This fits in with Xbox / mobile phone model perfectly.

So far we have: a naming system, a pay monthly system (for hardware and games), and games that will run on the last generation of systems probably until the next upgrade arrives. I’m reckoning that’ll be 2 years after the series X model begins. If they really start aping phones, it’ll be a year later.

It also makes it more likely I’ll stick with my one X ( which is really the first series X machine ) for now; and play on my spiffy PC too. I’ll have all the Xbox exclusives and get a ps5, which will hopefully fit in my TV stand.

Yep, strategy is becoming clear and like you I’ll stick with the 1X for a while and get a PS5. Upgrade the Xbox as and when needed.

Console gaming on mobiles isn’t going to work. Technically it might, but players won’t bother with this. I’ll be steering away from rental models - prefer to own my games as I have narrow tastes and don’t play many games.

Must admit, I’ve been considering getting an X with an upgrade to the next gen at a later date. Not sold on the PS5 as a device at all, MS for me at least are offering a far more enticing package. Sony will need to bring the big guns games wise, which is a worry as your ‘standard’ PlayStation game template has lost its appeal completely for me. At this point, a PS5 From-exclusive is the only likely thing I can think of that will have me considering a day-one PS5.

Well Sony aren’t really offering anything yet. They need to get a shift on though as currently Xbox is stealing the march.

Both still appeal to me, but Xbox are doing an amazing job of absorbing the pc gaming fan base here too. It’s almost like their biggest competitor is really Steam now.

If Nintendo really do come out with a compelling handheld upgrade like the much rumoured Pro model then Sony could be really squeezed in the middle here.

xCloud is essentially Xbox’s answer to the switch and it does run surprisingly well over half decent WiFi. And then you have the fact that Ninty and MS are super friendly right now.

It really would not surprise me to see gamepass and xCloud on switch by the end of the year.

There’s an interesting interview on the verge with the guy in charge of the new duo device where he explains that the duo having android is all to do with going where the customers are. They have no qualms about doing this kind of thing right now.
