So I’ve just finished this. I have some real reservations about recommending it though.
Emma Kent’s excellent review, which caught some flack from fanboys, is actually spot on, imo.
From story:
When Greez tells Cal his actions have changed his outlook on life, it’s incredibly jarring, as none of the necessary groundwork has been laid before that point. It’s just not believable.
to gameplay:
Maybe the Soulsborne format just isn’t the best fit for Star Wars. In order to provide challenge, enemies have to be struck several times - and this has the effect of making lightsabers feel underpowered.
I think she actually systematically went through every little detail and identified some real problems with the game. Story in particular, is weirdly told. People are suddenly like family with no intervening time to create that kind of bond.
Soulsborne staples like shortcuts, often prove completely irrelevant; losing boss fights rarely felt like it was my fault, which was a major reason for me persevering in DS, it just felt unfair; and very jarring given how easy it was to get to each boss in the first place.
There were a few moments where I really felt like a Jedi, but they were much too rare. I even did something in the final boss fight that I’ve never done before… l turned the difficulty down. I just wasn’t enjoying myself, and wanted it over.
As a real fan of both Soulslike games and Star Wars, I honestly can’t recommend it. I’m perplexed at all the super positive reviews out there. It feels like parents telling their kids they did really well so that they’ll do it again.
Its EA making single player games again, with no MTs in sight, so I’m glad it’s doing well. It’s just not even Respawn’s best single player campaign.
Pick it up in a sale, turn the difficulty down for the bosses and you’ll maybe have fun. If you’re after a great soulslike, get The Surge 2.
