I bought this in the BAFTA sale a few days ago and have played six or so hours. It’s a really interesting game filled with lots of fascinating ideas. It’s oddly beautiful but also extremely pretentious. It’s one of the wordiest games I’ve ever played, there’s practically no combat (so far) and it’s all been talking. It’s billed as an RPG but I’d say it plays closer to a point and click adventure. You walk around looking for things in the environment to interact with.
What makes it interesting is that almost everything in the game is a dice roll based on your stats, and those stats are the elements of your mental state. I think it’s based on freudian psychology but not knowledgeable enough about that to know for sure. There’s a huge number of variations for every conversation and encounter and things can take some weird turns. You can also have conversations with aspects of your personality and they can butt into conversations. They will also give you hints and tips occasionally based on you stats.
It’s a very interesting game and I am enjoying it, but I do find that after a couple of hours of reading on the screen I start to get a bit fatigued. One good thing in the UI is that the text is displayed in a sidebar, rather than along the bottom like most RPGs, which does help to make it easier to read.
Honestly, it’s more of an interactive novel than a game in places, but the randomness and the picturesque quality of the visuals have made it worth playing rather than reading so far.
