Full disclosure - back when Lily and I did Bear Cub, we tried to fund the kickstarter, but it failed. Thankfully they got funding from elsewhere and here we are.
So The Kid and I fired this up this evening for the first time. I kind of agree with most of the 5 to 7 out of 10 reviews, at first glance, with the caveat that - for the right gamer - it’s a gem of a game. It’s full of jank, the graphics are poor, especially in split-screen, and the combat is functional if not exactly kinetic, but it generates tales to tell your mates and it’s an open world splt-screen fantasy survival RPG. The survival aspect is front and centre too, you have to sleep, eat and drink as basic requirement for keeping going. Lots of crafting to be done too.
Lily and I spent a good 4 hours this evening just getting through the starter stuff and had a hoot doing it, with tales of giant chicken battles and hyenas and learning to craft, and me getting us both captured and turned into indentured labourers in a dingy old mine, where we managed to steal back our stuff and bribe the guard to let us out. As a result, we now know we have to be careful. You can’t save-scum this game and so any choices you make, and mistakes you make are permanent. You could lose everything you’ve gained and have to build it all back up again.
It’s a weird one, it really doesn’t look like it should have a place in current gen collections imo, but it does a lot of really cool things with the RPG genre that I certainly hadn’t seen done this way before. And honestly, being able to couch coop a proper fantasy RPG with The Kid? That’s priceless.
@DrDamn to answer your question - £27 on Amazon 🙂. Lily and I caved because split-screen. 😉
