So we discussed the EG review of Arc Raiders the other night. Now their CoD review is out and not a peep about it’s use of Generative AI. EG now seek to clarify and they are just making it worse…

It’s a weird retro justification - “how do we get out of this hole we dug ourselves?”. It was pretty clear why the Arc Raiders review was marked down, and that post-justification really does not cover it or align with the original review.

DrDamn That’s not at all convincing and reads like flailing “How do we get out of this?” to me.

I don’t have any issues with ARC Raiders use of machine learning for animation, that tech has been around for years. Paying voice actors to train generated dialogue is a “less bad” use of gen AI than what appears to be a lot of generated imagery trained on who knows what that’s used in CoD. None of it is great but if they wanted to make a principled stand they’ve got it the wrong way round in my opinion.

I always think this stuff risks falling into the trap of thinking about the output of a publication as being some cohesive thing, rather than just different people’s opinions. Was the Arc Raiders review an example of a publication taking a principled editorial stance, or was it really just the view of a single critic? At the end of the day different reviews by different people will be inconsistent because people are inconsistent.

Alex I totally get that point of view.

But there’s definitely been something off about the tone of EGs reviews specifically (the rest has been pretty good) ever since Chris Tapsell took control.

Whether that means they need to take more editorial control or less I’m unsure, but the entire review output has been way off whack for a while.

Alex I tend to disagree on this specific point. If you are going to mark games down due to use of Generative AI then that needs to be consistent across a publication/site. It’s more applying a matter of principle rather than opinion.

If he’d just said “don’t like this game, 2 out of 5” that’s perfectly fine, everyone gets an opinion. There’s just no way a game that has an otherwise glowing review should go from 4 or 5 stars to 2 because the reviewer didn’t like the voice acting, it makes no sense. It’s not even a narrative-heavy game, the voice stuff they’re complaining about is all inconsequential fluff.

Bumbling around the dam earlier, I suddenly had an angry German lady chasing after me shouting “Are you friendly?” and shooting. I eventually unmuted my mic and shouted back “I’m just looking for 3 apricots for my chicken FFS!” and then she apologised and left me alone. ARC Raiders is GotY and it’s not even close.

DrDamn The audio and visuals in this game are some of the most i have ever experienced. Got a nice pair of steelseries 7.1 with a 4k TV i get swept away to a different world and just lose myself! It’s fantastic

Had a peek in Stella Montis with a free load out. Lots of people interaction but all friendly as a solo. Except that guy who pulled a train of Arc into my little dead end. We both died horribly. Screw that guy.

r0wie also have the Steel Series, it’s fantastic. The sound really helps build tension and atmosphere, especially on solo runs when any little noise set’s you on edge 😃
