The biggest issue to be honest is that the right tyres for the conditions are slower then the wrong ones. What should be happening is that they all drive with full wet tyres and that those tyres are the fastest in those conditions.
But for whatever incompetent reason, right now the intermediates are much faster. They’re much more risky but they’re faster. So competition generally dictates if one person takes the risk then they all will.
Although to be fair, they were actually stopping the race at that point so in fact they had decided It was beyond acceptable limits. It got red flagged and restarted a considerable time later. They were on their way in, going slower than normal but they do have to maintain a certain speed or they’ll end up off the track anyway.
The point really is, had they waited a minute or two, just to get the race cars all parked up in the pit lane, it wouldn’t have cost anyone anything and would have been the safe thing to do.
A driver lost his life in near identical circumstances 8 years ago and the FIA should have been wise to this happening.
