one for further discussion in the other thread but it if the industry is going this way I’d like to see Sony look more to it’s Japanese roots. It seems to be on a mission to be more American than MS under Jim, but if they bought Square Enix, From Software and maybe Capcom that would make them more distinct compared to MS. I think this is what they will need because they can’t compete with ActiBlizzard levels of acquisitions. Unless they partner with someone bigger - Apple? Amazon?
The difference strikes me that MS are acquiring publishers like Activision - admittedly ones with in house development - and Sony tends to acquire developers, like Bluepoint for example. For Sony to buy someone like Ubi would not only need a much bigger chunk of cash than they’ve previously done, but a complete change in strategy IMO. I think it’s possible they might be panicked into it, but it’s not what I’d expect them to do generally.
Apple genuinely don’t care about games very much at all, and never really have, and have been shifting to an entirely integrated business for ages so I don’t see that really. And given the last Sony/Apple collab was (IIRC) the Apple Pippin…
Amazon, maybe. Possibly some sort of deal with Tencent maybe?
